Draft of Advert

Draft of the advert
Below are two advert designs that I did to help me decide what my actual advert should look like and how I should create it. Having an initial plan of what something looks like helps you when it comes to creating the proper product.

               Advert 1                                   Advert 2

Target Audience feedback

We needed to find out which advert design our target audience liked best, by doing this I decided to create a quick, closed questionnaire about the two and then come to a decision as to which would be the best one to create and would be most suitable for our target audience. Below I have displayed the results in a pie chart so you can clearly see which advert design won. I asked 10 people which one was their favorite; 10 people is a good round number to ask and would give the most reliable results.

As you can see from the results advert 2 clearly won and so this will be the chosen advert to do our final product on.

Final Digipack

Front and Back cover

Inside cover and CD

Final Editing Part

Finishing touches
For the front of our album cover we needed to use the approriate text that looked good for a girl band. W eventually found one on http://www.1001freefonts.com/ It took us a long time to find one, however we eventually did.

We used powerpoint to arrange the album cover altogether as this didn't make our picture get less sharper which a lot of other programmes did.

Editing process of inside album

Inside the album cover

By looking in the inside of other album covers we noticed that on the opposite side of the CD they had a very different image in comparison to the front and back covers. Many had song lyrics inside. The song lyrics looked very good on the inside cover and so me and my partner decided to do the same. Obviously we chose the lyrics 'Missing you' on the inside.

This is the original photograph that we decided to use on the inside cover as it was an up-close of the girls faces'. Many other album covers had an up-close of the artists face. We thought however that this photo look pretty boring and so wanted to edit it on photoshop.

Below is the editing we did do the photo. We thought that having it mainly black, the lyrics would show up better and it would look more professional and stylish.

For our final design we added the glow tool to the picture (to make the outside pink, matching the colour scheme all the same) and then used to paint to make everything black so the pink glow would stand out.

Lyrics for 'Missing You'

I miss missing you
I miss missing you

Where's the pain when you walk out the door
It doesn't hurt like it used to before
Where's the love that we couldn't ignore
It doesn't kick like a pill anymore
Where's the thrill at the end of our fights
Where's the heat when we turn off the lights

I just miss all the miss that we made
When we still have the passion to hate

I miss missing you, sometimes
I miss hurting you 'til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tears
Begging to get back together
I just want you to be
To be stuck in a second forever
So don't freak out and believe.

Sometimes I'm just missing
Missing You
I miss missing you

There’s a dark cloud pulling me in
That’s the girl I was breathing in sin
There’s a blind force letting it win
And it’s longing to tear us apart
I get high when you’re making me weak
Let me down ’til I crawl on my knee’s

I just miss all the mess that we made
When we still have the passion to hate

I miss missing you sometimes
I miss hurting you ’til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tear’s
Begging to get back together
I just want you to be
To be stuck in this second forever
So don’t freak out if I leave

Sometimes I’m just missing, missing you
I miss missing you

Miss missing, miss missing, miss missing
I wanna crush in your arms at the other side of the world
Miss missing, miss missing, miss missing
I wanna die for you ’cause love is only true if it hurts

I miss missing you sometimes
I miss hurting you ’til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tear’s (ooh)
Begging to get back together (together)
I just want you to be (want you to be, yeah)
To be stuck in this second forever
So don’t freak out if I leave

Sometimes I’m just missing (I’m missing)
Missing you (no, missing you)
I miss missing you

As you can see the lyrics are extremely long and so obviously we had to cut it down to fit on the inside of the album. We chose the beginning of the lryics to be featured.

Editing process of CD

The making of the CD
We noticed that alot of CDs were pretty basic looking as they had just a simple pattern on instead of an image of the artist. With the use of just a simple pattern I was able to adapt it to look more interesting and futuristic.

Above is the original photograph I took for the CD. The photograph was of a shirt that was worn by one of the band members in the photoshoot for the album cover. By using the checked pattern again it linked the digipack altogether. Deciding to choose this coloured shirt instead of a red one made the CD look more feminine.

We had to use photoshop to edit the photograph as this is the best kind of software to use for this kind of editing. By using photoshop I was able to manipulate the photo how I liked.

On photoshop there was a setting that allowed you to alter the photo and manipulate it any way you like to.

After editing it, this is what it looked like. We made the colours look brighter and the contrast of the colourswas alot stronger. By making it look like this it now looks more futuristic and personally I think it is more appropriate looking for a pop girl band.

We had to make the image into a circle to make it look more like a CD. We thought that using paint was the best way to get what we wanted. Using the circle tool we draw around it making it into the shape we wanted. Using a thick circle tool made it easier for us to use.

Once we had drew the circle around the image we had to delete the outer bit. Using the rubber tool we were able to do this. It took us a long time but we managed to do it.

Unedited original photo

Photoshoot
We had to take lots of pictures for our digipack as we wanted a wide variety to choose for our final draft of the digipack.

Audience feedback

Youtube audience feedback
To get a general idea of what people thought of our digipack ideas we decided to ask some random students what they thought of it. Watching back what they said it is mostly positive feedback, which is very good, however there is always room for improvement.

Sketches of our digipack

Drafts for Digipack

These are the drafts we made for our digipack. They are very basic drawings as they are only a plan/draft. The use of this draft allows us to get an indea of what our finall digipack could look like.

Moodboards

Album and single cover moodboards

The use of making the moodboards was to gather an initial background knowledge of what album covers actually look like and how we can make ours look similar to a traditional girl band album cover. Studying all of the album covers they all look pretty similar to each other, having all the members of the band in a line showing their whole figures. Each member of the band wears something different yet similar to each other so the audience can tell they are in a band together. The girls are all doing fun poses.

Email

I have decided to work in a pair with Amie Walker and we have decided together that we want to create a music video to the song 'Missing you' by The Saturdays. The Saturdays are an all pop girl band that create conventional pop songs. Before using the song I had to contact the music company for permission for copy right laws. The email to the left is the one we sent. We never got a reply so therefore we believe that it is alright to use the song for our own use.

DIRECTORS PITCH
Directors Pitch
Name of Artist/Group: The Saturdays
Title of Track: Missing You
Genre: Pop
Target Audience: Mainly females at the age of 16-35

Outline of Ideas: The music video is based in several locations through different villages, including a reserve- creating a romantic setting for the establishing shots, (setting the scene). The scenery and slow effects on the video will interlink with the lyrics being slow and emotional. The music video will concentrate on the romantic feel, maybe use a black and white theme due to creating a more dull emotional feel.

Intertextual References: The video will mainly focus on the lyrics of the song being portrayed through the emotion shown of the "artists" faces.

Locations: Looking through the research stage of media, I realised that a lot of pop band music videos use several locations. Especially in The Saturdays by using outside locations. We have chosen different romantic looking places to do our shooting schedules.

What resources are needed: Basic resources are needed for our video choice, with video camera and tripod to keep a steady shot. No props are needed, however it is important that we take into account what the girls wear in the video, as I realised this is a major impact with pop videos.

Key shots, and any special features: A lot of different shots are needing to be used, such as a establishing shot to set the romantic scene, this could include a pan shot. Also extreme close ups of girls miming their verses, and mixed shots for the group miming scene. We are planning to use different techniques while editing, such as black and white slow motion to add effect.

Justification of ideas in relation to genre and artist: I believe the ideas reflect the song choice well, as its needing to be romantic aswell as emotional, with little uplifting expressions on the girls faces, it will portray the song genre well.

Chosen artist and song

Deciding on an artist and song was extremely difficult however writing up a spider diagram of ideas really helped us make a decision.

Chosen Genre - Pop

Chosen Artist - The Saturdays

Chosen Song - Missing you

Digipack deconstructions

This is the front and back cover of Marina and the Diamonds album. The one to the right is clearly the front and the left one is the back of the album. Just from glancing at it you can instantly tell that the women pictured on the album is obviously the main singer or something. The women is pictured in the centre of both covers and so depicts thats she is the main attractive, concluding she is the lead singer. She is also pictured without any items of clothing on and so this shows that all the focus is on her and nothing else. Marina is the main attraction. With the back cover the writing of the song is surrounding marina and so this also concludes that she is the main feature. The song names are circling marina highlighting her face the most, making the audience concentrate on this the most.

This is the front and back cover of the album, finally woken by jem. By already looking at the album over you can get a feel of what the songs may be like by relating to the colour scheme. The colours used are very neutral and slightly dull looking. By using a calm blue colour this concludes that the songs on the album are relaxing soothign songs, still under the genre of pop. On the front cover of the album a child is pictured, curled up sleeping. This tells the audience that this image has something to do with the album name 'finally woken' and so is linked together. The colour scheme of blue is still strongly shown on the front. On the back of the album a background of the sea and clouds is shown with the list of songs neatly listed at the side so it doesnt distract you from looking at the background image. At the top of the albums covers a black long strip with the names of the artist and album is clearly written. Because of the long black strip it highlights the names and clearly indicates what it is called, which is ideal for an album cover.

Preliminary Task

For our Preliminary task we had to create a music video of our choice and create a video which is similar to the original. Of course there would be differences as we couldn't get the same kind of props and settings however making our own version of the video was very fun. The use of the Preliminary task enabled me to reach a basic understanding of how to make a music video and so gave me a little experience of making a music video.

Vengaboys - We like to party
This was the original video me and my partner decided to create our own version of. We decided to choose this video as the song is a classic 'pop' song and so would be perfect to try and do similar as we want to do a pop song for our final music video. Looking at the video you can see that there were alot of features that would be difficult to create. The set of the video would be impossible to have the same so there was a lot of set backs to the making of this video. However we very much wanted to keep the lively tempo living throughout our own version of the video.

Our own version evaluation
Overall, the making of our video was challenging as a couple of obstacles came our way, however we managed to create a music video with a variety of shots and gained skills that can be used for making our final music video. Studying the real music video of 'we like to party' we were able to capture the up-beat tempo of the song. Because it was only a practise we decided to do different techniques of filming, this included mid shots and long shots, even pan shots. This was great practise for prepartion of our final music video.

Video Deconstructions

The Saturdays - Ego

This is the video by The Saturdays, called Ego. I decided to deconstruct this video as it is very much in theme with the genre I want to go for which is pop. A girl band was another idea of mine which I am considering to base the video and song on. I studied this video very intently and then did a deconstruction of the video in a table. The use of deconstructing the video enabled me to clearly understand the concept of 'music videos'.

The Saturdays - Ego music deconstruction table.
Here is the table of the deconstructions I made a header for each collum and row and then in the boxes next to them I explained what the videos actually included.

Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit

This is the video by Nirvana, Smells like teen spirit. This is a very different type of video compared to The Saturdays as it is a completely different genre. You can tell that it is a different type of genre through the music but also visually through watching the video.

Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit deconstruction table

This is the music deconstruction table I made for the video by Nirvana. Studying the video showed me that it was very much an 'angry' looking video. A dark atmosphere is expressed which is similar to The Saturdays video but in more of a gothic kind of way.

Goodwins Guidlines

Key features of music video
Andrew Goodwin, director of music explains what key features make a good music video. Studying what Goodwin considers a good music video to be it really helps me with inspiration and a little guidance for my own video. Looking at Goodwins points I can make a safe judgement of what I should include and do in my music video. I have made some simple notes around some of the points to gain a better understanding of them. Personally I believe that point number 2 is the most important one and I should clearly indicate this in my music video; I have noticed that a lot of music videos include this studying the lyrics against the visuals.
Textual analysis of music videos 2
Although this green bit of text is talking about an essay, reading closely it gives you an indication of how a music video is judged and how you should make a music video in a similar way and style. When I read it I saw it as a type of mark scheme which will very much help me in the making of my music video.
